Almost every Kali upgrade either fixed or broke something for graphics card drivers. It’s been the longest running drama for all of us. Kali Linux 2.0 – Kali Sana is not different. Luckily, I get good user submission and feedback regarding various issues. Once such feedback regarding Kali Linux 2.0 – Kali Sana NVIDIA driver installation was posted just few minutes back by ‘PJ’.

Important Notes:

* Sorry, I don’t allow attachments, just text submission. But you can put image links. - If you are using VirtualBox or VMWare, then you don’t need graphics driver and installing such will wreck your UI.

Hi man i have Nvidia 9600m GT on ma Mac but When i do your guide i see an error because kali tell me to install Nvidia legaci driver 340xx. But i don’t find these driver anyware, how can i install please? Thanks

I have a Dell Vostro 1500 with an NVidia GeForce 8600M card. Attempting to install NVidia drivers with Kali 2.0 broke my installation. Upon restarting, I get the dreaded “Oh No, Something Has Gone Wrong” screen.
Had to do a reinstall.
I’m not sure if there is a way to install legacy NVidia drivers for old NVidia cards under Kali 2.0.
Yeah,i got the same problem.In fact,it is NVIDIA fail to install the driver on kernel 4.x.I tried using google around,found some patches,and none of them managed to make my NVS 140M video work with Kali 2.0.
I just decided not to bother with trying to get the legacy Nvidia drivers installed (for now). Everything works fine otherwise. The only reason for wanting the Nvidia drivers would be to allocate the GPU memory for other tasks – not really a big deal.
u mean reinstall, this is the only way there is no way to fix ?and by the way reinstall means install kali from the first time?
ALI – Yes, I had to reinstall Kali from the start which wasn’t a problem for me because I was using a laptop that had nothing on it so wiping it wasn’t an issue.

Yes I had to reinstall it very carefully because I have Windows 10 installed and I didn’t back up my files, so it was a rescue but fortunately I installed it without problems.

Great news – glad you recovered things!
I’m sure there’s a way to get the legacy NVidia drivers working (and/or to simply recover from the “Oh no! Something has gone wrong” message). For me, it just isn’t worth the trouble at this point. I’ll stick with whatever Kali installs since it works to provide suitable graphics.

I can’t log to my kali desktop anymore, hopefully I have windows 10 installed alongside

(Nvidia optmus config)
I have the nvidia optimus config. What worked for me was:
1) sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386 && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade (Don’t know if it is necessary)
2) sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia primus
3) sudo adduser $USER bumblebee
4) sudo systemctl enable bumblebeed
5) logout from user, then login again
6) check if it’s working typing: optirun glxinfo | grep OpenGL (mine shows NVIDIA Corporation and other stuff)
7) reboot
In my case the black screen with the _ appeared but after like 10 seconds, it worked!

To revert back after this error,
(1) Press CTRL + ALT + F1 to get console
(2) Login with your root account.
(3) Remove NVIDIA driver by pasting the following code.
(a)apt-get purge nvidia-kernel-dkms
(b)apt-get autoremove
(4)We have already removed the nvidia-kernel-dkms,the system had set it as default so to be on the safe side,we have to remove nouveau drivers(used by Kali as default).
(5)sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
(6)sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(7)sudo reboot

i got the same problem, and i won’t to reinstall them…
but i found the solution…
when the screen “oh no! something has gone wrong”
press ctrl + alt + f1
login as root
and
apt-get remove –purge nvidia-*
you save my kali TANKS !! I hope no freeze now
so how to go about installing legacy driver (340) into kali sana? ive gone round and round trying to get this working!
hey i have Kali Linux rolling installed on my Toshiba satellite hdd everything was working fine until i tried installing Nvidia drivers from this method on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZf4_6NXkhE . when i restarted i got an error message ” Oh No Something Has Gone Wrong. I am able to reboot and go to recovery mode but not my system. i tried reinstalling the grub with live cd still nothing. is there some way to repair this r do i need to reinstall Kali. please let me know because like i said kali is my primary os and id really hate to have to reinstall it and lose my info
